Reading for Pizza

There was an article last week in the Washington Post about local schools trying to limit the amount of food used as prizes. It was ironic because in the same the same week I found this in our Kindergarten handbook regarding encouraging reading.

"Every time your child has read 10 books he/she will be rewarded with a personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut!"

Excuse my sarcasm but Oh joy! Just what the diary allergic child wants! A personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut!

I have emailed the teacher (in a honey not vinegar sort of way) to ask what alternative she might be offering Max or if I should come up with a prize myself.

Oh, yuck! Food allergies or no, who wants their kid eating fast-food pizza all the time? And what 5-year old can eat a whole personal-sized pizza, anyway?

Of course, I'm one of those who doesn't much care for the idea of rewards for reading in the first place. Isn't reading supposed to be fun? To me, the logical reward for reading 10 books would be a special trip to the library to find some more books!

Oh - we got that stuff all the time. I just gave my daughter (allergic to dairy, egg, peanut/tree nut) money. I would sent the coupons back (every time) but they'd get sent home anyway. ::sigh:: I'd prefer they give little trinkets away instead of coupons for food..

This is an exact point we made to Loudoun, VA School Health Board last April about how it's distracting enough for our kids to avoid the food focused bday parties and goodie bags all year, but then to also have educational program incentives be food as well? No, I don't remember many food allergies as a child myself, but I do remember the classroom and other programs as a pure learning environment. Of course, the exception of PTA events...I think pizza party rewards is something that is done here too right? Schools/teachers are starting to come around, but PTA awareness is sorely needed. Anyone have any experiences on approaching PTA events for healthier alternatives? We are considering here, but know it's going to be our toughest challenge - non allergic parents...and you know the kind I'm talking about!

Yeah, ick. How about they just hand over a jar of grease and be done with it.

Last year I sent up a "goodie" bag full of little things from stickers to tiny toys for the teacher to keep for my child and pass out instead of the "treats" at reward time. It worked like a charm. This year first grade has been different. Her teacher for parties/projects has forgot and allowed unsafe food in the classroom. I tried the "honey" approach until finally I had to stand firm. I told the teacher that I had scheduled an appointment with the principle to discuss school policy regarding my child's allergies. At this point the teacher got serious regarding food allergies.
