Ace of Cakes

Today Max requested a Bakugon shaped cake for his Bakugon themed birthday party. I pondered how this would be possible and thought of Ace of Cakes (awesome TV show) and fondant. Then wondered if fondant was allergen free. Apparently it is just sugar and water. Then I found this recipe for fondant. And now I am pondering if I can really make a Bakugon cake ala Ace of Cakes. Hmmm. What a challenge. Problem is I will be coming off of 5 1/2 weeks of an intense teacher training course. Will I be up for a challenge the end of July?

call in the experts... ask Leslie for help - she used to do this as her job - she's amazing, I bet she'd either give you pointers, help w/ a trial run, or help with the real thing

One thing, though... fondant looks really cool. But it tastes pretty nasty. You can always just eat around it, but I thought I'd mention it!

Hi Kari,

Jack also wants a Bakugan party! I think I can help with the cake part but I don't have a clue as to what kind of activities go along with that theme! Charlie just had a Star Wars party this weekend and that was easy to plan. I made a death star cake and have decided that's the same way I'll make a Bakugan cake. I'm sure you have a good 'safe' cake recipe. So make up a batch and then bake in a large metal bowl. Do it again and make a second one. Voila - you have two hemispheres! Trim them down a little so they have flat tops and frost the center (not sure what you use for frosting but even jelly will work) and stack them. The good news was that when I stacked the cakes, they have a slightly flat bottom from the bowl and so were stable and I didn't need to use skewers or anything to hold them together. I'll email you a photo of the Death Star separately. Good luck!

I have a question that isn't related to this post, but it is allergy related. My daughter is 6 month old tomorrow, and I know on the 17th I'm going to get a lecture from her doctor because I haven't started solids yet(she's still EBF). Ideally I'd like to wait until we do allergy testing, but her pedi isn't willing to do it before 1yr, and I think it may be a fight to get a referral to an allergist. Currently I'm avoiding soy, dairy wheat and tomatoes because we've had problems when I ate them in the past. (I have FA so I knew what to look for after she was born). Because I'm avoiding them, and have been since she was 5 weeks old I almost feel like I've done her a disservice since her pedi hasn't "seen" a reaction. We had a full body rash which the pedi attributed to hormones, but went away after I got rid of soy, eczema which is all gone as long as I stay away from wheat, soy, and dairy, and her "reflux" has magically cured itself as well, and returns if I slip up(doesn't happen often anymore) or test a food.

Basically, I'm terrified to start solids. I don't want to do rice cereal because I feel it's nutritionally void, but at the same time I'm scared of an ana reaction to anything else. Any tips? Ideas? Encouragement? I'm almost in tears today because I'm so darned anxious. If you find yourself with a few minutes that you wouldn't mind using to email me it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Go for it! I use Peg's fondant recipe all the time. It tastes waaaay better than pre-made fondant if you happen to eat it. You can make it weeks in advance and keep it in the fridge until you need it! Have fun!
